SkyReal – VR mode

VR controllers

SkyReal in VR is compatible with Oculus or a Vive.

The behavior of the left and the right hand controller is the same with one trigger controlling the selection, one button controlling the menu, and one pad to navigate in the 3D.

Selection

In SkyReal, it’s necessary to select objects before applying an action on them. For example, if the command highlight is called without selection, nothing will happened.

To select objects: point the controller to an object and click with the trigger « Select ».

When an object is selected, there is an outline on it and if the HUD is enabled, the selected element will appear in the headset.

VR menu (aka Pie menu)

To execute an action in SkyReal, it’s necessary to hold the « Open Pie menu » button. When the button will be release, it will execute the selected action (if a command is selected)

The VR menu is composed of several section that can either be:

  • Sub menu slice (contains an arrow at to border). This is used to display another VR menu.
  • Command slice . This is used to execute a VR action in SkyReal.
  • Command Toggle slice . This is used to execute a VR toggle action in SkyReal.
  • Command Numeric slice (contains an arrow at to border). This is used to execute a VR action based on a number.
  • Command Choice slice (contains an arrow at to border). This is used to execute a VR action based on a choice.

To navigate in the VR menu, the controller that hold the button should move to the desired slice (no orientation needed, only position is taken into account).

If the desired pie contains an arrow at the border, move the controller to the slice and to move away from the center of the pie.

If the desired pie doesn’t contains an arrow at the border, release the pie button and the action will be executed.

Navigation

There are several navigation displacement metaphors in SkyReal based on the navigation pad.

Fly

The fly navigation is the freest navigation mode. In this mode, the user is not attached to the ground.

  • To move forward in 3D, push the navigation pad forward and point the laser in the direction you want to go. If the laser is pointing down, it means that the user will go down. If the laser is pointing up, it means that the user will go up.
  • To move on the sides, push the navigation pad on the left or right. The user will step aside on the same direction as the pad.
  • To turn around yourself in VRmake a 90-degree angle between the controller and the head (left or right) and push the navigation pad forward/backward.

Walk

The Walk mode is fit to the ground and improve the quality of user immersion.

  • To move forward in 3D, push the navigation pad forward and point the laser in the direction you want to go.
  • To move on the sides, push the navigation pad on the left or right. The user will step aside on the same direction as the pad.
  • To turn around yourself in VRmake a 90-degree angle between the controller and the head (left or right) and push the navigation pad forward/backward.
  • If the user has an obstacle on its way, he will be stuck until he move in the other way
  • If there is a walkable obstacle (<20 cm), it will not consider it as a blocking obstacle.

Teleport

The teleport mode is used for users having trouble with motion thickness.

  • Pull in the navigation pad forward to aim where you would like to teleport to.
  • While the navigation pad is pushed, you can choose the target orientation by turning the pad.
  • Release the navigation pad to teleport to your selected position and orientation.

Leave VR

When the VR session is over, select the exit VR command on the VR menu or simply push « escape » on the keyboard.
